It’s tough to find the right way to apologize to your girlfriend, isn’t it? Have you grown tired of the bickering and shouting, the arguing, punctuated by long periods of the silent treatment? Did you do something wrong? It really doesn’t matter – if she’s upset with you, you’re going to have to apologize. The future of your relationship depends on the quality of your relationship. Step 1: If it really is your fault, man up and take responsibility.

Admitting that you’re wrong isn’t easy. Your only reasonable first step in making amends is to admit your mistake, if in fact you made one. Part of being a man means taking responsibility for your actions, not making excuses.  This is the heart of the apology – tell her exactly what you did wrong, and promise that it won’t happen again. Step 2: Don’t make her reaction be the heart of another argument.

You didn’t expect hearts and kisses the second you apologized, did you? Some girls are quicker to forgive and move on than others, and your mistake also will influence how long it takes. It’s hard to apologize, and a girl worth keeping will appreciate that you manned up and did it. Taking responsibility for your actions includes accepting her response.  When you apologize, you cannot set terms or insist that she accept it automatically. Step 3: Give each other some time and some space.

Pain and resentment in relationships often comes from the things we blurt out without thinking. Thinking things over and calming down at such times can really help a relationship, so do your best to do just that.  The sort of impetuous things we say when we’re angry often are regrettable when considered in the cold light of day, and so those circumstances should be avoided. Take a walk to let some time pass and tempers cool. Rational thinking can only help both of you.

Step 4: Do something to remind her you love her.

Do something for her that reflects that you put time and thought into it – prepare her favorite dinner, or write her a poem from your heart. The sky’s the limit, really, as long as you take care of all the preparations yourself and what you do really is for her. Nice gifts also will make an impression, but you can’t let them take the place of a special gesture. Whatever gesture or gestures you make, though, must be sincere and reflect your heart. You’ve got to let her know that you really mean your apology and want to be building your future together, and it’s gestures like these that help that to happen. All things considered, failure to make her feel good after you apologize will diminish the value and meaning of the apology.

Step 5: Put it behind you.

The final step of the apology process is to let the issue die as you look forward to a nice future together. Past mistakes have no part in your current relationship. You need to let past mistakes die. Focus on today and tomorrow, not yesterday. You have to be concentrating on enjoying together the life you have now, no the mistakes of the past.

When you find yourself having to apologize to your girlfriend, keep these steps in mind. Remember, it’s not unthinkable to make a mistake. When we can learn from our mistakes and put them behind us, then our lives will be better.
